Nine years from the original WWE Cruiserweight Championship being retired, the company decided to revive the belt in 2016 with the critically acclaimed Cruiserweight Classic which gave us iconic moments like Kota Ibushi vs. Cedric Alexander and Bryan Danielson screaming "BURNING HAMMER!"

Along with the new WWE Cruiserweight Title, the cruiserweights would get their own show in 205 Live and the championship would be defended across main roster shows and 205 Live until 2019, when the title was no longer used on the main roster and instead began to appear on NXT and NXT UK.

This would see the belt be renamed the WWE NXT Cruiserweight Title, which would continue to be defended until it was unified with the NXT North American Title in January 2022.
