The lineage of the United States Championship stretches back to 1975 and Harley Race in the National Wrestling Alliance, with the belt later becoming the secondary title in World Championship Wrestling.
The WWE version of the United States Championship was created in 2003 following the brand split between Monday Night Raw and SmackDown, with the inaugural champion being crowned at that year's Vengeance pay-per-view.
