NJPW Resurgence Results

New Japan Pro-Wrestling held their latest pay-per-view in the United States on Sunday, May 21 as Resurgence emanated from Long Beach, California. 

The show was built around the tournament to crown the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women's Champion as Mercedes Moné faced Stephanie Vaquer, and Willow Nightingale took on Momo Kohgo in first-round matches. Nightingale and Moné emerged victorious from their respective contests and they went one-on-one in the main event. 

After a spirited match, Moné picked up an injury down the stretch after she hit a falling hangman on Nightingale to the outside and landed awkwardly. The match then went straight to the finish and after some referee awkwardness following a powerbomb, Willow connected with the move again to score the 1-2-3 and win the NJPW STRONG Women's Championship.

Moné was carried out of the ring following the match and she is believed to have sustained a broken ankle. 

The final of the IWGP United States Heavyweight Title number one contender's tournament was also made official as Will Ospreay defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi in their semi-final match at Resurgence. The Commonwealth Kingpin will now face Lance Archer in the tournament final at Dominion on June 4. 

A title change also took place at Resurgence as KENTA defeated Hikuleo by count-out to regain the NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship. KENTA scored the victory after he sent Hikuleo crashing through a table after he fell 10 feet. Eddie Kingston then appeared on the big screen after the match and challenged KENTA to an NJPW STRONG Openweight Title match. KENTA accepted the challenge. 

In other title news, Kyle Fletcher announced that Aussie Open were vacating the IWGP Tag Team Titles and NJPW STRONG Tag Team Championships due to an injury sustained by Mark Davis. New IWGP champs will be crowned at Dominion when Bishamon face EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi. There is no word on a match for the NJPW STRONG Tag Team Championships. 

Toni Storm made her full NJPW debut at Resurgence too as she helped her husband Juice Robinson defeat Fred Rosser in a Street Fight.
