Report: Jon Moxley Didn't Originally Plan On Re-Signing With AEW

Jon Moxley only planned to be full-time in AEW for three years

While Jon Moxley has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal with All Elite Wrestling that will keep him with the organisation through 2027, that was not the original plan.

Moxley signed a three-year deal with AEW back in May 2019 after his WWE deal expired, debuting in AEW to close out Double or Nothing 2019. Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Moxley's original plan was to work for three years in AEW and then work independently with the idea that his AEW deal would be his last major contract.

That was still the plan as of late last year whereby he would have worked AEW shows as a freelancer, Moxley revealed to Sports Illustrated. Those plans changed after he went to rehab, though, and Moxley has been in a different headspace since.

"A year ago, I wasn't in the same head space. I was all f*cked up. I hated travelling. I was living in Vegas, felt like I was always in an airport, flying coast to coast, and I was sick of leaving my family. I thought about freelancing when my deal was up. Not that I would leave AEW, but I didn't want to be there every week. I was in a bad place. Then I went to rehab and all that, and now I'm in a totally different headspace. We're living in Cincinnati, too, which is great. I look forward to going to TV every week. I get to see my friends in the Blackpool Combat Club. I'm not f*cked up. I have a clean headspace. My life is completely different than it was a year ago, and all for the better," Moxley said.

Meltzer noted that AEW extended Moxley's original deal due to his stint in rehab which meant his contract expired in mid-July. The AEW World Champion did not immediately sign a new contract, however, and he worked on a handshake deal until signing the five-year extension around All Out.
