Backstage News On AEW Booking Bryan Danielson Vs. Nigel McGuinness For Grand Slam

Update on AEW plans for Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGuinness

Almost 15 years to the day of their last in-ring confrontation, Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness will rekindle their historic rivalry in All Elite Wrestling when they go one-on-one at Dynamite Grand Slam on September 25 inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match will be Nigel McGuinness's first singles match since he retired in 2011.

Fans have long speculated that All Elite Wrestling planned to book Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGuinness at some point, with McGuinness making it no secret that he would come out of retirement for the opportunity to wrestle in Wembley Stadium and for a match against Danielson. The former ROH World Champion was able to wrestle at Wembley, competing in the Casino Gauntlet at All In.

AEW didn't necessarily plan to book Danielson vs. McGuinness, however, with Dave Meltzer reporting on Wrestling Observer Radio that their singles match had not been planned for very long.

"From what I understand, the whole McGuinness thing was not something long planned out...You always thought they were going to do [the match] before Danielson retires. I guess New York is a place. They'll probably have a great match," Meltzer said.

McGuinness has barely contained his contempt for Danielson on AEW commentary, often referring to the current AEW World Champion as a "clamdigger" and once saying that Danielson used to be a vegan but he couldn't give up eating Brie.
