John Cena Believes There Is "Another 10 Years Worth Of Story" From A WWE Heel Turn

Plenty of tales to tell as a heel

One of professional wrestling's great debates revolves around if WWE should have turned John Cena heel while he was the company's top star. WWE even debated a change internally to the extent that Cena had new gear made but Vince McMahon ultimately never pulled the trigger, with the 16-time world champion's strong merchandise sales said to be a factor.

While fans previously saw Cena as a heel during his early WWE career, before he turned babyface in late 2003, The Doctor Of Thuganomics believes there is "another 10 years worth of story" that would come from him turning heel.

"It takes a certain type of individual to go out there and play your hit song every night for two decades. There are decisions I can make, but I don't make, 'Okay, now John Cena's gonna be a bad guy.' I don't make that choice. Then I can be like, 'Okay, I'm never gonna be a bad guy. How can I nuance a virtuous character?' Would it have been great to be able to mess with the 'flaws' of WWE John Cena? Oh my goodness, I think there's another 10 years worth of story in there. But it's not my choice. I don't run the company," the 44-year-old told GQ.

Cena has performed in WWE on a part-time basis for the past several years and he most recently returned in the summer of 2021 to face Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. When Cena will next be back in a WWE ring remains to be seen.
