Report: WWE Releases Tony Chimel

Mike Johnson of PWInsider recently reported that WWE released former ring announcer Tony Chimel on Friday along with 10-15 behind the scenes employees at Titan Towers. 

Chimel had worked for WWE on a full-time basis since 1991. He was the SmackDown ring announcer from the show's inaugural episode in 1999 until 2007. Chimel was also the ring announcer on ECW, NXT, Superstars and Main Event. In recent years, Chimel had primarily worked backstage as a production manager and helped oversee the ring crew. He still made cameos on WWE TV to introduce Edge from time to time, though. 

Director of Venue Merchandise, Remote Operations Derek Casselman was also let go by WWE. He had worked for the company for 27 years and was well-liked by many according to PWInsider.

SuperLuchas later confirmed that Spanish-language commentator Jerry Soto was released on Friday as well. Soto had worked for WWE since 2011. He was furloughed during company-wide cutbacks in April. 

Soto told SuperLuchas (translated using DeepL): "Hi. I am officially out of work. I'm taking up a little of your time to tell you that I've been on furlough since March. Now, it's time to get another job, preferably an acting one. I'm writing here so you can keep me in mind with employment opportunities. Thank you for your time. This is not the end, but another beginning. If you have lost your job too, patience, joy and strength, and to all, a sanitized hug."
