Vince McMahon's Infamous WWE Lockbox Never Had A Planned Payoff

No payoff ever planned for infamous Vince McMahon WWE lockbox storyline

One of WWE’s major flaws over the years has been a lack of satisfying endings for some of their major storylines, such as the ‘Higher Power’, the raising of the briefcase at King of the Ring 1999, and the McMahon lockbox in 2016.

Speaking of the lockbox, whilst it was used as a vehicle for the returning Shane McMahon, a Fightful Select report suggests there was never a payoff planned.

In storyline, Shane returned to WWE to contest Vince’s ownership of Raw, with ‘Shane O’Mac’ taking on the Undertaker at WrestleMania 32 for control of WWE’s flagship show. The stipulation for McMahon vs. Taker stated that if Shane lost then Vince would gain possession of a mysterious lockbox which was assumed to hold a dark secret.

WWE sources told Fightful when asked that there was never a confirmed item in the lockbox, with the MacGuffin a last-minute addition to the story made by Vince McMahon. Such last-minute additions and rewrites of WWE storylines were commonplace during the final years of McMahon’s tenure in charge of WWE creative.

Now, can we finally confirm whether Christopher Daniels or Jake Roberts were originally set to be the the Higher Power?
