AEW Felt "Double-Crossed" By AAA

AEW feeling "double-crossed" by AAA could have led to CMLL partnership

The recent working relationship between AEW and CMLL has sparked some talk about the status of AEW’s relationships with AAA, given the history of bad blood between the two Mexican promotions. Either way, AEW entered this relationship with CMLL, and a big part of that might have come down to the company feeling “double-crossed” by AAA.

As noted by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Tony Khan and AEW felt hard done by due to the actions of AAA, stemming back to 2022.

In December 2022, FTR were working in AAA, dropping the AAA Tag Team Championships to the team of Dragon Lee & Dralistico, both of whom had appeared on AEW programming in the past. However, straight after this match, Lee revealed in a promo that he was saying farewell to AAA and signing with WWE, something that was then announced by WWE shortly after. Using AEW talents to put over a soon-to-be WWE talent was something that wasn’t taken kindly by Khan, with the report from Meltzer noting that he felt “double-crossed”.

Whilst it may not have been a direct factor, Meltzer goes on to say that after this AEW sought a connection to CMLL, especially with the friendship between Khan and Romero.
