After it had been teased in recent weeks by TBS Champion Mercedes Mone, the reigning ROH Women’s World Champion Athena has made her presence known on AEW programming for the first time since AEW Battle Of The Belts X in April 2024, and her first appearance on either Dynamite, Collision, or Rampage since 2023.
Her appearance comes after Mercedes Mone defeated and made fun of her ally and protege Billie Starkz in recent weeks, as Mone had openly taken shots at “whoever trained her”. Athena emerged on Collision to face off with Mone and their pair had a physical altercation. Mone would pull her Collision opponent Robyn Renegade into harm's way, escaping from the ring as Athena stood tall.
During the show, both Athena and Mone declared their respective entries into the 2025 women’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament which will see the winner head to AEW All In: Texas 2025 to challenge for the AEW Women’s World Championship. It was reported in recent weeks that Athena and Mone were expected to do battle with one another at the upcoming AEW Dynasty 2025 PPV.
