Backstage Update On WWE Likely Bringing Back The Winged Eagle Title For Saturday Night's Main Event
Could the Winged Eagle return for WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event?
Dec 12, 2024
After months and years of promises, it seems Cody Rhodes could finally be bringing the classic Winged Eagle title out of retirement for WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.
In a vignette posted to social media, Triple H was shown presenting Rhodes with a long case and mentioned the contents were Rhodes’ “for one night only”. Rhodes was then shown opening the case away from the camera with gold shining out onto his face - a la Pulp Fiction.
Many have assumed this means Rhodes will get to wear the classic ‘Winged Eagle’ version of the WWE (formerly WWF) Championship, with Rhodes having lobbied to bring it back since returning to WWE in 2022.
In a report from Fightful Select, discussions have taken place within WWE to use the Winged Eagle, with Rhodes unsurprisingly one of the loudest voices pushing for its return. The report also states that numerous talent outside of Rhodes have pushed for classic titles to return, potentially part of the reasoning behind WWE paying homage to the classic tag titles and ‘Big Gold Belt’ with title design refreshes in 2023.
If the Winged Eagle does return ‘for one night only’ then don’t be surprised if its return is indeed brief, as the current design of the WWE Championship has been an important visual branding tool for WWE when presenting replica titles to celebrities and dignitaries.
