Becky Lynch Explains Why Singles Match With Ronda Rousey Didn't Happen

Becky Lynch offers an explanation as to why a singles match with Ronda Rousey never came to fruition

One of WWE’s biggest “what if” matches comes in the form of Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey. In 2018, this singles match was supposed to take place, though an ill-timed broken face on the part of Lynch led to their Survivor Series clash being cancelled. In the months which followed, fans looked ahead to WrestleMania 35 as the place to host this intense feud and matchup. In the end though, Charlotte Flair was added to the picture and it became a triple threat match.

Fast-forward to 2022 upon Rousey’s return to WWE, she won the Royal Rumble match but opted to choose Charlotte Flair instead of Becky Lynch. A singles match ultimately didn’t end up happening. Speaking to Alex McCarthy of the Daily Mail, Lynch explained that the reason why this match didn’t end up happening was due to it no longer having the same interest that fans had previously.

“I suppose at the end of the day, I was still able to get the win [in] the main event of WrestleMania, be the first ever woman to win the main event of WrestleMania. Do I think that was the match that everyone was clamoring for? Yes it was. Everyone wanted that singles match. And I think, people thought that moment in time would be evergreen and it wasn't. That's OK too. I think you can't force things when they're not there and I think we see that with what's currently going on with the product. For years, everyone wanted The Rock vs Roman Reigns, but it's not the time for it right now. Everyone wants Roman vs Cody (Rhodes). Some things have their seasons and we didn't have that season. If she ever comes back again, maybe that season will be right there. Maybe it will be springtime on that story again, but it never got back to that.”

Rousey parted ways with WWE in 2023 and there is no talk on a return to the company for the former two-time world champion. A match with Lynch appears off the cards for the foreseeable future.
