When it comes to WWE and wrestling as a whole, the length of a career for men’s wrestlers has often stretched longer than that of their women counterparts. In WWE especially, it isn’t as common to see women’s wrestlers compete at the highest level beyond their 40s, whereas it is way more commonplace in the men’s division.
This is something that former WWE Champion Big E wants to see expunged from the world of pro wrestling. When speaking on the Backlash 2025 pre-show, Big E discussed the match between Lyra Valkyria and Becky Lynch, and the whole notion of ‘passing the torch’, before noting that he feels as though there is currently a disparity in the views towards both men’s and women’s divisions and their respective ages.
“So much of the narrative is, is this a passing of the torch moment? Becky talks a lot about age and the way we talk about age with women and the way we talk about age with the men. For a lot of women who are in their late 30s it's, 'Oh, are you winding down? Are you ready to get out?' It feels like 75% of the male side is 38, 39, 40, 45. Let's give the women the same honor and same grace as well.”
This comes shortly following reports of the reason behind the release of Dakota Kai, with it being put down to her age - 37, with her not being seen as a long-term name at the top of the card. For comparison, Cody Rhodes returned to WWE at the age of 36 in 2022, and has since main evented WrestleMania three years in a row, won two Royal Rumbles, and reigned as WWE Champion. Big E might have a point.
