This year’s men’s Royal Rumble was poorly received across the board, with fans pointing to a lack of storyline progression, too much predictability, and a lack of credible threats to win being reasons why the historic battle royal failed to deliver.

One wrestler who was conspicuous by their absence was Cesaro, with ‘The Swiss Cyborg’s omission the latest in a long line of disappointments for the star. Cesaro himself acknowledged his disappointment in conversation with Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso, saying:

“Yes, I was [disappointed]. A lot of people would have liked to see me in the Rumble, and a lot of people would have liked to see me win. That would have put me on the next path of my journey. I saw Big E say in an interview he’d like to see me win, and that was very nice. I appreciate the support of my colleagues, but unfortunately, that did not happen.”

After feuding with Seth Rollins heading into last year’s WrestleMania 37, many had Cesaro pegged for a long deserved main event push, but so far this has failed to materialise.
