WWE’s acquisition of AAA has been the talk of the professional wrestling world, so much so that AAA’s fierce rivals CMLL have commented on the historic deal.

Whilst WWE’s acquisition of AAA has as many upsides as potential downsides, WWE CCO Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque has stated he hopes to ensure the future of traditional lucha libre through WWE’s buyout of the company. During the April 25th edition of CMLL Viernes Espectacular, the historic promotion displayed the following message on screen during the show open as a not-so-subtle response to the deal:

“Mientras exista la Arena México, La Lucha Libre no morirá jamás.” (“As long as Arena México exists, Lucha Libre will never die.”)

CMLL is the oldest active pro wrestling promotion in the world, with Salvador Lutteroth I founding the then-EMLL in 1933. Arena México - CMLL’s home base and proclaimed ‘Cathedral of Lucha Libre’ - was built in the 1950s, and still hosts CMLL shows every week.

Despite Triple H’s promise to honour traditional lucha libre through WWE’s partnership with AAA, AAA itself was formed as an antithesis to traditional lucha, with mid-90s AAA events at times having more in common with Paul Heyman’s ECW than CMLL, leading to a partnership between the two sides.
