Since his departure from All Elite Wrestling in early 2022, the exact reason behind why Cody Rhodes left the promotion he founded has yet to be revealed beyond that he and Tony Khan had a personal issue. Rhodes has sporadically discussed his time in AEW since leaving the company, though, alleging that AEW put out "propaganda" about him following his departure and revealing his belief that the final part of his AEW run was terrible.
Rhodes has opened up more about his exit from All Elite Wrestling, however, and Rhodes noted within a short clip promoting his upcoming appearance on the Bill Simmons Podcast that there is still a mix of "bad blood, respect, and love" for AEW.
Rhodes addressed feeling disrespected in AEW, though, noting that being disrespected in WWE was "one thing" but "feeling disrespected at something I built with my friends…that we built, feeling disrespected there…I wouldn't stand for it. I think with Brandi and I both...I'm so blessed to have her. It was one of those where it was like, 'F*ck it.' I did way more here than you think and you're going to find out the moment I'm out the door.'"
Rhodes added: "I don't believe in the cold-hearted back-stabby type of revenge. The greatest revenge on Earth is success. And, I felt like we were sitting on something wonderful, something great, a huge potentially…with what I was doing with the American Nightmare as a bad guy, as a good guy, something in between. We're sitting on something magic and if I'm not doing to do it in the house I literally with Matt (Jackson), Kenny (Omega) and Nick (Jackson) built? Then, buddy, I'm going elsewhere."
There was an option for Cody Rhodes to remain with AEW as Tony Khan could have activated an option year in Cody's contract, but the AEW president ultimately decided not to after he realised Cody wished to leave the company.
Rhodes returned to WWE at WrestleMania 38, and he has been one of the company's top stars ever since.
