Upon the expiry of his New Japan Pro-Wrestling contract, David Finlay received interest from All Elite Wrestling and WWE and ultimately had the option to sign with either company.
Finlay ended up choosing AEW and he made his full-time debut in the promotion on the March 4 episode of Dynamite as he aligned with his former Bullet Club stablemates Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors to form The Dogs.
Speaking with WrestleZone, Finlay revealed why he decided to sign with AEW over WWE:
"Let's see, I was in New Japan for 11 years, and every single year there were rumblings that I was going to leave. Every single year, they kept growing louder and louder. Finally, I got over doing a 14-hour flight four times a month and decided I wanted to leave Japan behind.
"Obviously, I've got family ties in another company, and I sat and thought about it. I was like, well, you know, I've never made a dime with my brother. I've never made a dime with my father. And I've made fat stacks of cash with these boys here. So the choice was easy."
Finlay then claimed his father, Fit Finlay's, greatest accomplishment was helping to create him.
"My dad's greatest accomplishment is the fact that I came out of his nut sack. That is the greatest thing he's ever accomplished," Finlay added.
WWE's plans for David Finlay would have seen him be revealed as the leader of the Birth Right faction in NXT. The stable includes Fit Finlay and David's brother Uriah Connors, along with the likes of William Regal, Charlie Dempsey, Lexis King, Channing "Stacks" Lorenzo, and Arianna Grace.
Reports have noted that WWE only offered Finlay an NXT contract, and he chose the more lucrative offer from AEW.
