Friday Night SmackDown opened up with Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton sharing some kind words following their recent match at Night Of Champions, with Orton giving Rhodes some motivation to go on to SummerSlam and defeat John Cena. Hearing enough of the emotional talk and soppy words, Drew McIntyre made his return to WWE programming after over a month away.
McIntyre had last been seen losing to Damian Priest in a Steel Cage match at the previous edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, reportedly working injured for quite some time and being unable to move his neck. The expectation at the time was that he’d be out for a while, though this is no longer the case. McIntyre insulted the pair of Orton and Rhodes, walking straight into an RKO for his trouble.
It was announced later in the show that McIntyre’s first match since returning would be against Randy Orton at the JUly 12 Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta, Georgia. The current match card sees LA Knight battle Seth Rollins and Gunther defend the World Heavyweight Title against Goldberg, in what will be the Hall Of Famer’s final ever match.
