El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru Win NJPW Super Junior Tag League 2021

Suzuki-gun win!

For the first time since it became a league in 2018, Super Junior Tag League was won by a team other than Roppongi 3K.

Three teams were in the running for the trophies on the final day of the tournament and El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori, El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and Robbie Eagles & Tiger Mask were all hoping they could pick up wins on August 17 at Korakuen Hall.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Robbie Eagles and Tiger Mask were knocked out ahead of the main event, though, when they faced Ryusuke Taguchi and Master Wato. Both Eagles and Tiger Mask tried to put their opponents away, but Taguchi managed to pin Tiger Mask with a roll-up to eliminate them from the tournament.

This meant the winners of El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori vs. El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru would leave Korakuen Hall with the trophies.

Bullet Club dominated the vast majority of the match but they couldn't score the winning pinfall. ELP thought he and Ishimori had the match, though, after he decked Despe with a loaded Sudden Death. Kanemaru was the legal man, however, and the Suzuki-gun member caught Ishimori with a Low Blow and rolled him up for the 1-2-3 while Phantasmo pleaded with the referee.

In other happenings at the event, both Roppongi 3K and Gedo & Dick Togo ended the tournament without a win. They were scheduled to face off today but the match was declared a double forfeit by NJPW as neither team was able to compete.

Roppongi 3K split up yesterday after SHO turned on YOH. Gedo and Dick Togo were also unable to wrestle as they were in close contact with BUSHI and Shingo Takagi, who both came down with fevers.

The final standings for Super Junior Tag League 2021 are as follows:

  • El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru 8 Points (4-1) - Winners
  • El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori 8 Points (4-1)
  • Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato 6 Points (3-2)
  • Robbie Eagles & Tiger Mask 6 Points (3-2)
  • Roppongi 3K 0 Points (0-5)
  • Gedo & Dick Togo 0 Points (0-5
