EXCLUSIVE: Visual Concepts Reveal They Couldn't Introduce WarGames Before WWE 2K23

WarGames couldn't be added to a WWE game before WWE 2K23

Since its introduction to WWE back in 2017 through NXT, fans have clamoured for WarGames to be playable in a WWE video game and that finally became a reality in WWE 2K23. Fans can do anything they want in the Match Beyond in three vs. three or four vs. four matches in this year's title.

Speaking about WarGames' debut in a WWE video game with Cultaholic Wrestling's Andrew Hodkinson, Lead Gameplay Designer at Visual Concepts Derek Donahue revealed it wasn't possible to add WarGames to the series before WWE 2K23.

"It's a match that we've had our eyes on for a long time. NXT definitely strengthened that idea that we really would love to have WarGames in the game. I'd say 2K23 is the first year we could ever have done it. It really required us from 2K20, kind of gaining control of our systems sort of, and 2K22 finally really laying that foundation and even kind of pre-working on it in 2K22, we had our eye on it knowing there was no way we could get it into 2K23, and 2K23 we would have to be really aggressive. It was so important to us, we wanted to get it in in the earliest iteration of the game we possibly could and I kind of can't believe that we were able to pull it off in WWE 2K23," Donahue said.

WarGames matches were held annually in NXT from 2017 until 2021. The concept moved to the main roster in 2022 at Survivor Series, which saw The Bloodline defeat Kevin Owens, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Butch, and Ridge Holland. Bianca Belair, Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, Asuka, and Mia Yim also defeated Damage CTRL, Nikki Cross, and Rhea Ripley inside the structure.
