Leon Slater enjoyed the biggest night of his TNA Wrestling career on Sunday, July 20 as the 'Youngest in Charge' became the youngest X-Division Champion in history by defeating Moose at Slammiversary. Not only did Slater win the belt, but he was interrupted by AJ Styles in Mr. TNA's return to the promotion, and Styles put over Slater as the future of the promotion during their in-ring segment.
Styles and Slater continued their chat once they were backstage at Slammiversary, and Slater revealed to Cultaholic what he and 'The Phenomenal One' spoke about.
"He was telling me all sorts of stuff, man. Not only was it in-ring advice and little bits that could have been changed to make stuff pop even more within the match itself, more than anything I appreciated the time he took to just talk to me about real life. He's someone that's been through everything in the wrestling business. He's been in Japan, he's been in WWE, obviously he came up through TNA, so he really has seen it all. He was just telling me the thing that's helped him the most and that he's seen get people the furthest is just staying true to who you are," Slater said.
"I'm in a super lucky position where I get to be in the TNA locker room, which is the best locker room in the world, on a monthly basis. I'm lucky enough that I like to think I'm slightly close with a Frankie Kazarian, and an Eric Young, and an Eddie Edwards, and these people that have connections all over the wrestling world...Leon Slater in real life, I try and stay as grounded as I can and I think word of that got back to AJ. So he was saying all the good stuff he's heard about our locker room and the morale and my morale in the locker room," Slater continued.
"That's what really tipped him over the edge and made him want to come and give me that praise. And he was just saying as long as you can stick to that, you're going to go far. Which is something I've always tried to do, but getting that confirmation and validation from AJ, it's huge."
As champion, Slater is set to lead the X Division and he is open to facing any of the talents in TNA at Bound for Glory. His dream opponent at the pay-per-view, however, would be AJ Styles.
"If we were talking about dreams here and putting things into the universe for stuff to happen, I think there is only one answer, and I think that answer is 'The Phenomenal One' AJ Styles. Especially after this Sunday. There was a lot of chants for one more match and if that one more match does happen - not if, when that one more match does happen, I think it's obvious who's going to be waiting for him and I'm going to be ready," Leon added.
Leon Slater's full chat with Cultaholic Wrestling's Tom Campbell will be available on the Cultaholic podcast feed on Friday.
