It was tonight announced on Twitter that WWE Extreme Rules will feature a 30-minute Iron Man match.

The announcement was made by Raw GM Kurt Angle, who tweeted:

This comes following a pair of matches on Monday Night Raw between Rollins and Ziggler. The night after Money in the Bank - where Rollins successfully defended his Intercontinental Championship against Elias - Ziggler defeated Seth to become the new champion.

Last week the pair faced off in a rematch, again for the title. This time, in a bout that lasted almost half an hour, Ziggler's tag partner Drew McIntyre interfered to prevent the championship from changing hands.

There have been 15 officially recorded Iron Man bouts in WWE history, some taking place at house shows and live events. The first came at a 1993 live event in Boston, Massachusetts, and saw Bret Hart defeat Ric Flair 3-2 over the course of an hour. The most recent was at the Great Balls of Fire pay per view in July 2017, and saw Cesaro and Sheamus defeat The Hardy Boyz 4-3 in a 30 minute tag team title match.

The Iron Man stipulation has also headlined WrestleMania. In 1996, at WrestleMania XII, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels wrestled to a 0-0 draw over 60 minutes, before HBK took the deciding fall in overtime.

Extreme Rules takes place on July 15 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The other matches currently announced are as follows:

WWE Championship: AJ Styles (c) vs. Rusev

WWE Raw Women's Championship: Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Nia Jax

WWE SmackDown Women's Championship: Carmella (c) vs. Asuka

WWE Raw Tag Team Championship: Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt (c) vs. The B Team

WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship: The Bludgeon Brothers (c) vs. Team Hell No
