Karrion Kross and Scarlett's contracts with WWE expired at midnight on Sunday, August 10 and their actions suggest they are indeed done with WWE, with the married couple announcing they are now accepting bookings. WWE have also moved Kross and Scarlett to the alumni section of WWE.com, further suggesting the wrestlers are done with the organisation.
The nature of Kross and Scarlett's exits means the situation has been met with a heavy dose of scepticism, however, with some suggestions noting it may be a worked imitation of the real-life situation that saw R-Truth depart WWE and be brought back within days following mass fan support for Ron Killings.
Fightful Select has reported that Kross and Scarlett leaving WWE appears to be legitimate, unless WWE have taken measures beyond what they have done in the past with previous departures. WWE talent and employees within creative have been told by the company that Kross and Scarlett's departures are real, and they have also been removed from WWE's internal roster. Should the situation be a work, though, it would involve Kross, Scarlett, and WWE higher-ups being in on the situation together, with talent and WWE creative being worked.
Such is the possibility of the situation being a work, though, that pro wrestling promoters were unsure if they should be reaching out to Kross and Scarlett about bookings, although this was reported before Kross and Scarlett announced they were accepting bookings. Higher-ups in MLW do believe the situation is a work.
Pro wrestlers within WWE that Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has spoken to expect Kross and Scarlett to return to the company, and they believe the current situation is simply a work.
"It's definitely being kept quiet. It's a weird one. There's way, way, way too much talk and the nature of the talk makes me think there's more to it. What's he saying, that they gave him an insulting offer? They gave him an offer and he didn't sign as of this week. He may be a free agent," Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio.
"I know that he's doing a tour right now. He's doing a lot of media because his book came out on Tuesday. The people who are doing interviews with him are being told...it's not WWE that's sending him on the tour, it's ECW Press, and they've basically said you cannot ask any questions regarding his contract situation, WWE situation," he continued.
"The belief in WWE is he's going to be back but, you know, we'll see. They are not telling anyone anything, but everyone is pretty sceptical. It's like are they working the boys on this if he comes back? You can say yes, but it's not like they're being fooled. It's not like guys are coming and going, 'Oh no, he's really gone.' No one is saying that. They're just sort of like, 'We don't know and whatever. We don't know but we figure he's going to be back and we kind of figure it's an angle, but we don't really know.'"
It has been reported that WWE offered Karrion Kross a new contract in the days before his deal was due to expire. Kross has said that he was profoundly disappointed by the offer on the table.
