WWE NXT New Year’s Evil was a monumental night that truly signalled the end of the ‘black and gold’ era of the brand.

With Bron Breakker defeating Tommaso Ciampa to become the new NXT Champion, it was clear the new era was here to stay, evident as Breakker symbolically ‘tore down’ the old NXT branding before booting a golden ‘X’ in half on his way to the ring.

The symbolic dismantling of the old NXT was hardly subtle, and according to a report from Fightful Select, many within WWE didn’t like the scripted stunt.

This, combined with the recent releases of several long-term NXT backstage staff members including William Regal, only goes to indicate the lengths that some in WWE likely want to take in getting rid of the old NXT and ushering in the neon soaked NXT 2.0.

The change from NXT to NXT 2.0 was one of the biggest wrestling stories of 2021, with many believing WWE made the change in light of AEW ‘winning’ the ‘Wednesday Night Wars’.
