Former AEW Women's World Champion Mariah May made her official WWE debut on Tuesday night during a surprise appearance on NXT.
As several competitors sized up new NXT Women's Champion Jacy Jayne and a brawl erupted, the lights went out and, when they came back on, May was standing on a balcony, illuminated by a spotlight.
Speaking on the microphone, May declared that she had "finally arrived" and would become the next NXT Women's Champion because "the best women's division in the world just got more glamorous".
May later posted a picture of herself backstage at the show with the caption, "Honey I'm home". She subsequently changed her X/Twitter profile bio to read "wwe superstar".
It was widely expected that Mariah May would sign with WWE upon the expiration of her AEW contract. She had not been seen on AEW television since losing to Toni Storm in their Hollywood Ending at the Revolution pay-per-view on March 9.
Fightful Select has reported that May has signed a multi-year deal with WWE and a number of talents being moved to the main roster was done in anticipation of May debuting on NXT. The likes of Giulia, Stephanie Vaquer, and Roxanne Perez have all been officially called up to Raw or SmackDown over the last month, while Jordynne Grace is expected to be on the main roster in the very near future.
Only a very tight circle knew May had signed with the company ahead of her debut, it is claimed within WWE, but the plan for a while has been for May to begin on NXT.
May joined the company within days of her AEW contract expiring at the start of June. AEW were interested in re-signing May but ultimately no deal came together, with reports noting that wrestling for WWE was May's dream. Fightful stated that those they spoke to in AEW didn't believe she departed the promotion on bad terms.
