Matt Cardona pitched for John Cena to be his mystery opponent at The People vs. GCW from the Hammerstein Ballroom earlier this year, but Cena turned down Cardona's Hail Mary in a prompt exchange.
While noting his dream match is the one that makes him the most money, Cardona stated on Insight with Chris Van Vliet:
"I would love Cody or Cena. I pitched Cena to wrestle me at Hammerstein Ballroom, GCW, because I had this mystery opponent. I reached out, I threw the Hail Mary. Obviously he couldn't do it, but I tried...It was a back and forth [laughs]. A question and a response, but I tried."
Cardona and Cena do have a history from their time in WWE, with Cena infamously stealing the then-Zack Ryder's on-screen girlfriend Eve Torres in 2012. Cena also did little to help Cardona when Kane pushed his wheelchair off the WWE stage.
Matt Cardona's mystery opponent at The People vs. GCW ended up being viral sensation Tommy Invincible.
Cardona has not wrestled for GCW since the Hammerstein Ballroom show but he remains a regular on the indies alongside appearances for TNA Wrestling. The 40-year-old has regularly discussed a WWE return, however, and he stated earlier this year that he believes he has earned the opportunity to make a comeback.
