New IWGP United States Champion Crowned At NJPW Resurgence
The Ace is champion!
Aug 15, 2021
Hiroshi Tanahashi is a champion in New Japan Pro-Wrestling once again.
The Ace clashed with Lance Archer in the main event of NJPW Resurgence on August 14 for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship and Tanahashi picked up the win after 17 minutes.
Archer dominated much of the encounter, but Tanahashi dug deep to make a comeback and the eight-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion connected with an Aces High and two High Fly Flows to pin Archer and win the gold.
Following the match, The Murderhawk Monster told Tanahashi he truly is The Ace and asked him to come to All Elite Wrestling. Archer also asked the new champion to grant him a rematch at a later date.
With his win at Resurgence, Tanahashi becomes the 10th IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion. The ninth champion, Lance Archer, defeated Jon Moxley for the title on the July 21 edition of AEW Dynamite in a Texas Death Match. He held the gold for 24 days before dropping it to Tanahashi.
Elsewhere on the NJPW Resurgence show, Tomohiro Ishii defeated IMPACT Wrestling's Moose, Jay White retained the NEVER Openweight Title against David Finlay, Will Ospreay returned to NJPW, and The Good Brothers vanquished Jon Moxley and surprise partner Yuji Nagata before they were confronted by Guerrillas Of Destiny.
