There were numerous surprises at last night’s ROH Final Battle 2024 PPV event, including the shock return of Danhausen, the long-awaited comeback of Bandido, and the re-emergence of Jay Lethal’s Black Machismo gimmick. Another was the surprise appearance of Nigel McGuinness, who stepped back into a ROH ring for the first time in 15 years.

Lee Moriarty emerged at ROH Final Battle to offer out an open challenge for his ROH Pure Championship, and he was greeted by none other than former ROH Pure & World Champion Nigel McGuinness, who is often considered as one of the legends of ROH and one of the greatest Pure Champions - he was notably the man who last held the old version of the Pure Title before it was unified with the world title in 2006.

The pair battled it out for 17 minutes until Moriarty used a rope-assisted crossface for the victory, submitting McGuinness and retaining his gold.

McGuinness returned to the ring for the first time since 2011 earlier this year, appearing as a surprise entrant at All In’s Casino Gauntlet inside Wembley Stadium, before then taking on former rival Bryan Danielson at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam. McGuinness’ last ROH match was all the way back in 2009, where he took on Bryan Danielson at Glory By Honor VIII: The Final Countdown.
