New Japan Pro-Wrestling held their latest major event, Hyper Battle, today at Sumo Hall and six championships were on the line.
In the main event, New Japan Cup Winner Zack Sabre Jr. challenged Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title.
After 28 minutes, though, it was Okada who retained his title following a Landslide Tombstone Piledriver and the Rainmaker.
Okada has been champion since defeating Shingo Takagi for the gold on the January 4 Wrestle Kingdom 16 event inside the Tokyo Dome.
Two new champions were crowned, however, as Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan defeated YOSHI-HASHI and Hirooki Goto for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, while Taichi beat Toru Yano in their No Rope, Ring Out Match for the KOPW 2022 Provisional Trophy.
A new United Empire member was also revealed as 22-year-old Francesco Akira made his NJPW debut, interrupting El Desperado and Taiji Ishimori's exchange following the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion's successful defence over SHO.
Akira has performed for various European independent wrestling promotions, including RevPro and OTT. He is best known in Japan for his time in All Japan Pro-Wrestling where he is a former AJPW Junior Heavyweight Champion and a former Jr. Battle Of Glory tournament winner.
IWGP United States Champion SANADA also vacated his title after sustaining a fractured orbital bone against Will Ospreay in their March 17 New Japan Cup match. Ospreay and Hiroshi Tanahashi came out following the announcement and they look set to face off for the vacant title at Wrestling Dontaku on May 1.
