NJPW New Japan Cup Day 1 Results

Who won?

The 2022 edition of the New Japan Cup got underway today at the Nippon Budokan with eight first-round matches.

While the likes of YOH, Yujiro Takahashi and Togi Makabe had the opportunity to spring surprises, they failed to defeat Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tetsuya Naito and Jeff Cobb respectively, as the favourites advanced to the next round.

A match that is traditionally reserved for the anniversary show instead took place on March 2 too as IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado went one on one with IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada.

Check out the full results from day one of the New Japan Cup below:

  • CIMA def. TAKA Michinoku
  • YOSHI-HASHI def. Tomoaki Honma
  • Hirooki Goto def. Yuji Nagata
  • Jeff Cobb def. Togi Makabe
  • Taichi def. Toru Yano
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi def. YOH
  • Tetsuya Naito def. Yujro Takahashi
  • Kazuchika Okada def. El Desperado

Seven of the winners advanced to the second round while Taichi moved straight to the third round as his next opponent Hiroyoshi Tenzan was pulled from the tournament with a knee injury.

The first round of the New Japan Cup will continue on March 6 before concluding on March 7.
