NJPW held their Windy City Riot event last night on Friday April 11, taking over the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois. The show featured several notable moments, title changes, a big farewell, and more. We will take a look at the biggest headlines from the show before taking a look at the full match results on the night.
It was an emotional night for NJPW legend Hiroshi Tanahashi, who wrestled his final ever match on US soil at last night’s show. He battled AEW’s Konosuke Takeshita as part of his 2025 retirement tour (ending at the beginning of next year at Wrestle Kingdom). Takeshita successfully defended the Never Openweight Title against a defiant of Tanahashi who kicked out of many of Takeshita’s best shots, including a defiant kick out at 1 after a Blue Thunder Bomb and High-Fly Flow. The pair went back and forth with big moves, but in the end Takeshita’s onslaught was too much, as he defeated Tanahashi. The pair shook hands after the match and the locker room filed out to celebrate with Tanahashi on this special night in the US.
Another notable moment took place lower down the card as NJPW crowned a brand new Strong Openweight Champion, as Tomohiro Ishii felled Gabe Kidd in a hard-hitting 30 minute Iron Man match. There were a lot of strikes and chops early on, tiring out both men, until Kidd had enough of trading blows and nailed his opponent with a stiff lariat. The action went outside the ring, with Kidd trying to steamroll Ishii, although the challenger moved and his momentum took him into a bunch of chairs in the crowd. Kidd scored the first fall with a Doctor Bomb, before Ishii equalised with a Triangle Choke. In sudden death overtime, Ishii won with a Brainbuster.
