WWE’s plans for the Undisputed WWE Championship picture heading into WrestleMania 42 have chopped and changed on numerous occasions thus far, with the likes of Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, and Jacob Fatu no longer in the mix, with the current plan now seeing Cody Rhodes defending the gold against Randy Orton. When it comes to WWE’s original plans for Rhodes vs. Orton, more has now been learned.

According to a report from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE were always intending to head towards a program between the two for the WWE Championship, though this was set to be the post-WrestleMania feud for each man, rather than the one heading into the show itself.

It is noted that the decision to firmly go with Rhodes vs. Orton and McIntyre and Fatu instead of any sort of multi-man match or a planned Hell In A Cell match between Rhodes & McIntyre came following the injury suffered to Bronson Reed over on Monday Night RAW. It isn’t stated exactly why this injury led into WWE’s decision-making for the WWE Championship scene.
