'Outside The Box' Options Being Considered For AEW World Title Challenger At Forbidden Door

Update on AEW plans for world title match at Forbidden Door

The AEW World Title match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door may be different from what fans might expect on the show.

According to Fightful Select, multiple talents from New Japan Pro-Wrestling have been mentioned as potential challengers for the AEW World Championship at Forbidden Door. "Outside the box" options have also been considered for the pay-per-view, although what exactly these options are is unknown.

The challenger for the AEW World Title at Forbidden Door will be determined in a Casino Gauntlet on the May 29 edition of Dynamite. Excalibur noted on commentary that "international stars" will compete in the match.

Swerve Strickland is the reigning AEW World Champion, having successfully defended the title against Christian Cage at Sunday's Double or Nothing pay-per-view. Strickland has held the AEW World Title since defeating Samoa Joe for the belt at Dynasty.

AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2024 will be held at New York's UBS Arena on Sunday, June 30.

Another bout rumoured for the Forbidden Door pay-per-view is an IWGP World Heavyweight Title match between Jon Moxley and Tetsuya Naito. Moxley defeated Naito for NJPW's top title at Windy City Riot on April 12.
