Report: Backstage News On Botched Spot Involving Sting At AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door

Sting was part of a botched spot at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023

Sting has been somewhat of a daredevil since returning to the squared circle in All Elite Wrestling, with The Icon regularly involved in big spots as part of his tag team or trios matches alongside Darby Allin. Key moments include Sting leaping from the top of the tunnels at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2022 to take out The Young Bucks and El Phantasmo, and the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion hitting a splash from the crowd at Revolution 2022 to drive Andrade El Idolo through four tables.

Sting was on the receiving end of a major spot at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023 on June 25, though. The 64-year-old teamed with Darby Allin and Tetsuya Naito against Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, and Minoru Suzuki at the pay-per-view. The match continued to tease a full-blown babyface turn for Guevara after Chris Jericho set up a table on the floor and placed Sting across it. Guevara looked conflicted on the top turnbuckle but he eventually put Sting through the table with a 630 Splash following plenty of barking from Jericho.

The moment didn't take place as originally planned, however, and Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer has reported that Sting was supposed to roll off the table and avoid the 630 but The Icon simply didn't get out of the way in time.

Sting, Darby Allin, and Tetsuya Naito would go on to win the match after Naito pinned Minoru Suzuki. The feud with the Jericho Appreciation Society will continue on AEW Dynamite when Sting and Darby Allin face Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara. The match came about after Jericho interrupted Sting and Darby's post-Forbidden Door media scrum.
