Report: Backstage News On CM Punk's Injury

More on CM Punk's injury

CM Punk made a major announcement on Friday's episode of Rampage as the AEW World Champion revealed he had sustained a broken foot and would require surgery. The Second City Saviour admitted he offered to relinquish the AEW World Title but Tony Khan did not strip Punk of the gold.

Instead, Punk will remain AEW World Champion and an interim champion will be crowned at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door on June 26. In the match will be the winner of Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Hirooki Goto at Dominion on June 12 while the other participant will be determined on Wednesday's Dynamite when Jon Moxley faces the winner of a Battle Royal.

CM Punk will then face the interim champion to crown an Undisputed AEW World Champion when he returns from injury.

According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, All Elite Wrestling knew Punk was injured following his six-man tag team match on Dynamite but the promotion did not know how bad the injury was until Friday afternoon, shortly before Rampage went on the air.

There is no word on how long Punk will be on the shelf after he undergoes surgery.
