After three months off WWE TV, Drew McIntyre made his return at Money in the Bank on Saturday, July 1 and Irn Dru immediately inserted himself into the Intercontinental Title picture as he took out GUNTHER with a Glasgow Kiss and Claymore Kick.

The plan is reportedly for McIntyre to challenge GUNTHER for the Intercontinental Championship, with the company and McIntyre having agreed on creative a few days before Drew made his return to WWE.

During his time away from the promotion, there was some speculation that McIntyre might come back as a heel, a role he hasn't portrayed since late 2019. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE ultimately opted to bring Drew back as a babyface so he could receive a big pop at Money in the Bank, which took place in London, and so he could feud with GUNTHER, who is a heel.

Many believe McIntyre will experience more long-term success as a heel on Monday Night Raw as Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins are ahead of him on the babyface depth chart.

McIntyre's long-term future in WWE remains uncertain as he has yet to sign a new deal. His contract reportedly expires in early 2024, but WWE have the option to extend his deal through WrestleMania 40 due to injury time.
