Report: Backstage News On 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin's Return Match

Stone Cold wrestled in a WWE ring for the first time in 19 years

It was the talk leading up to WrestleMania 38 - would ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin actually wrestle his first match since WrestleMania 19?

On Saturday we got that answer, when Austin’s main event appearance on The Kevin Owens Show turned into a full-on brawl between the two, with Austin leaving as the victor.

Now a report from Fightful Select has shed some more light on the preparations for the match, revealing that Kevin Owens was informed of the plans as far back as January, with Austin having been pitched to work a match at that point.

The report also states that the actual match was ‘kept fairly tight lipped’, with Vince McMahon telling backstage producers that ‘they would decide exactly what to do’ close to the day of WrestleMania night one in order to make sure Austin was comfortable with things.

It has also been said that this match with Austin or a potential programme was not part of the negotiations to get Kevin Owens to re-sign with the company, with the former WWE Universal Champion committing his long-term future to WWE in December 2021.
