Friday Night SmackDown featured a very awkward match ending that led to fans being unsure if things went entirely to plan, or if it were awkward by design. Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green battled Zelina Vega in a non-title match. During the match, Green threw Vega into the ring from the outside, before posturing and engaging with the audience and commentary. This led to her missing the referee’s ten count, jumping back in the ring after the referee had ended his count, leading to the bell being called.
Both the commentary and Green sold the moment as a shock, but played up to the fact that she’d been distracted on the outside. Vega celebrated and was announced as the winner. PWInsider have reported that the finish was in fact botched, and Green legitimately missed the referee’s count.
It is noted that one person believed that Green thought the referee would restart the count after she’d thrown Vega into the ring, and she didn’t hear him counting. There were reportedly no injuries or other reasons as to why the match ended soon, and it was simply an accident. However, it is stated in the report that a win for Vega was actually the original plan, but it wasn’t set to come for another few minutes.
