Report: NJPW's Plans For IWGP World Heavyweight Title Revealed

Will Ospreay vacated the title last week due to injury

It has not been a good few weeks for New Japan Pro Wrestling. The Covid crisis has seen Japan’s state of emergency extended, throwing the future of several high profile shows in doubt, and seeing several NJPW test positive for the virus. NJPW are also dealing with uncertainty around its main title the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, with Champion Will Ospreay vacating the title on May 20 due to injury.

Kazuchika Okada was next in line to challenge Ospreay, and according to a report from the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, plans are seemingly in place for a title match at Dominion:

“We were told the title would be decided with Okada, who was scheduled for the next shot against Ospreay, and someone else,” said Meltzer “Presumably that other person would be either Shingo Takagi or Kota Ibushi, and the likely destination would be the 6/6 Dominion show at Osaka Jo Hall. But none of this is official, plus Osaka has been hard hit by COVID and with only five percent of the country vaccinated things look to be hard hit for a while.”
