The New Day faced off against Sheamus and Ridge Holland on Friday's episode of SmackDown but the match ended in disaster for Big E as the former WWE Champion landed on his head following a Belly To Belly Suplex on the outside from Holland.
Big E was stretchered out of the arena and The Powerhouse Of Positivity has since announced he suffered a fractured C1 and C6 neck vertebrae, although he will not need to undergo surgery as neither were displaced.
While Big E may have suffered a fractured neck, there is no heat on Ridge Holland, with the incident having been put down as "accidents happen", according to Wade Keller of PWTorch.
"I will say I heard that Ridge Holland was very apologetic and very sorry about what happened backstage. He handled himself well. There doesn't appear to be any heat on him. This was not a reckless move or something that Big E wasn't ready for or that seemed like in any way Ridge Holland did anything wrong. In terms of the spot, it's just accidents happen is what I was told," Keller said on a PWTorch VIP audio show.
If Big E will be able to continue his in-ring career remains to be seen, though, as a doctor noted a C1 fracture often heals incompletely which could force the former WWE Champion to retire.
