Report: No WWE Plans For Cody Rhodes Vs. Roman Reigns In The Near Future Despite Clash In Italy Tease

A renewal of hostilities between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes was teased following WWE's Clash in Italy pay-per-view on Sunday, May 31, but that doesn't mean a match is planned for the near future.

WrestleVotes on WrestleVotes Live noted they have been told there are no plans for Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns to take place during the summer of 2026.

Why exactly WWE booked Reigns and Rhodes to bump into each other backstage following Clash in Italy, resulting in a brief staredown between WWE's men's world champions, is unknown. Reigns and Rhodes have been linked since Cody made his return to WWE in 2022 and they are currently 1-1 in singles matches, with Reigns successfully defending the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Rhodes at WrestleMania 39. Cody defeated Reigns to end his multi-year reign as champion one year later in the main event of WrestleMania XL.

Another Reigns vs. Rhodes match was teased following their WarGames team's loss to The Vision at Survivor Series 2025, which was scheduled to be the precursor to another WrestleMania main event match at WrestleMania 42. Those plans were ultimately scrapped, though, and Rhodes headlined night one of WrestleMania 42 against Randy Orton in a programme that was dominated by Pat McAfee, while Reigns defeated CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of night two.

Rhodes stated earlier this year that he and Reigns have a "very strange" personal relationship and they were allegedly kept apart on the set of Street Fighter. Roman Reigns will star as Akuma, while Cody Rhodes will portray Guile in the movie that is set to be released in October.

As they are both world champions, the next time Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns might happen could be at a future WWE Crown Jewel pay-per-view, with those shows now being built around champion vs. champion matches.
