It wasn't just within the storyline that The Rock wanted Cody Rhodes to align with him on WWE TV.

Dave Meltzer has reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that art imitated life to some extent as The Rock, when he decided to be a part of the build to WrestleMania 41, wanted Cody Rhodes to turn heel and align with him. Rhodes was offered the opportunity to turn heel but he turned down the idea. People within WWE also believed Rhodes turning heel would have harmed the company as they feel the current fans within WWE are "Cody's crowd."

After Rhodes turned down the angle, the heel turn was offered to John Cena and he accepted. This resulted in Cena turning on Rhodes at Elimination Chamber and aligning with The Rock, ending a 22-year run as a babyface for Cena.

The original plan for Cena's heel turn was for him to turn at WrestleMania 41 during the finish of his Undisputed WWE Title match with Cody Rhodes, similar to Steve Austin at WrestleMania X-Seven. The decision was ultimately made to do the heel turn at Elimination Chamber, however.

Travis Scott injured Cody Rhodes during Cena's heel turn, which has reportedly resulted in the rapper having heat in WWE.
