Report: Tony Khan Always Planned To Put The AEW World Title On CM Punk At Double Or Nothing

CM Punk was always planned to become AEW World Champion at Double Or Nothing 2022

Rumour and innuendo this week suggested that CM Punk used his power to change the outcome of AEW Double or Nothing 2022, with rumours suggesting that Punk was never meant to beat Hangman Page for the AEW World Championship at the event and pressurised Tony Khan into changing the outcome.

However, according to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter this is not true, with Khan always planning to put the belt on Punk at the event, with the AEW President reportedly having made the decision ‘months’ before the show.

Punk defeated Page for the title in Double or Nothing’s main event, with Hangman famously dropping his ‘worker’s rights’ promo ahead of the event. Punk would take umbrage with Page’s comments, and unleashed a tirade at Page and other members of the AEW locker room during the post-All Out press conference in September 2022. This led to Brawl Out, a backstage fight that saw Punk and Ace Steel clash with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks.

Punk has been out with a triceps injury since All Out, and is believed to be close to an in-ring return, should he choose to return to pro wrestling.
