Report: WWE Backlash Set To Return

WWE are planning to bring Backlash back for 2023

WWE may be on the road to WrestleMania, but they seemingly have one eye beyond the ‘Showcase of the Immortal’, with reports suggesting Backlash is set to return in May.

According to Wrestlenomics’ Brandon Thurston on Patreon, WWE are set to run Backlash on May 6, returning to the classic name after running the show as ‘WrestleMania Backlash’ for the past two years.

The report also suggested that WWE will run King & Queen of the Ring on Memorial Day weekend, meaning WWE could possibly be running two PPV events in May.

The first Backlash event aired in April 1999, and was the first non-In Your House PPV event WWE ran outside of the traditional ‘big five’ since This Tuesday in Texas in 1991. Backlash was eventually scrapped following the 2009 edition, before first being revived from 2016 until 2020, before taking the WrestleMania Backlash name for the 2021 and 2022 editions.

Notable moments in Backlash history include Hollywood Hulk Hogan defeating Triple H for the Undisputed WWF Championship in 2002, and AJ Styles defeating WWE Champion Dean Ambrose for the title in 2016.
