Heading into WWE WrestleMania 39 and everyone just knew that Cody Rhodes would ‘finish the story’ and defeat Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Rhodes, however, was unsuccessful in his match with ‘The Tribal Chief’, a decision which many disagreed with both inside and outside of the industry.

With the recent Tribal Combat battle between Reigns and Jey Uso at SummerSlam having divided opinion and prompted accusations of the Bloodline storyline ‘jumping the shark’, some have wondered if WWE were wrong to have Reigns win at Mania. A report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter suggests that WWE are sticking by their decision and still strongly believe they made the right call, with numbers remaining high with Reigns still the champ.

The report suggests that WWE’s continued domestic and international growth in 2023 is proof that WWE made the right call, whether you agree with the Mania result or not. 2023 indeed has been a successful year for WWE thus far, with the promotion’s output critically and commercially successful, all led by Roman Reigns as champ.

Meltzer argued that WWE could have easily put the title on Cody and kept the Bloodline drama going, whilst admitting that you can’t argue with WWE’s results in terms of ratings and income.
