Report: WWE Title Lineage To Continue When Roman Reigns Loses The Undisputed WWE Universal Championship

Update on the WWE Title lineage concerning Roman Reigns' Undisputed WWE Universal Championship

The recent unification of the WWE Title and Universal Championship into one Undisputed WWE Universal Championship belt has had fans pondering about the lineage of the belt.

Whereas the recently introduced WWE World Heavyweight Championship is a brand new title with no previous lineage, a report from Fightful Select suggests that when Roman Reigns loses the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship then the belt will continue the lineage of the classic WWE Championship.

The report mentions that sources within WWE are adamant that the ‘histories’ of both the WWE and Universal Championships are technically separate, but it appears that the Universal Championship will seemingly be retired once Reigns finally drops the belt.

The decision to continue the lineage of the WWE Championship makes the most sense, as the title has been in rotation since early 1963, when the then WWWF created the title for Buddy Rogers after the NWA controversially conspired to replace ‘Nature Boy’ as their world champion -  a decision not recognised by the WWWF.

WWE have recently began streamlining their championships, with the recent renaming of the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship to the WWE Women's Championship an effort to ease any confusion surrounding brand-specific titles.
