WWE's plans for the Crown Jewel pay-per-view was ultimately the reason behind Sami Zayn defeating CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship on the September 11 edition of Friday Night SmackDown from Mexico City, Mexico.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider has reported the belief amongst several within WWE is that the company are looking for Crown Jewel to be headlined by Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn. To do that match, Sami Zayn had to defeat CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship at some point before November 7. The title change also allows WWE to hold off on a WrestleMania 42 rematch between Roman Reigns and CM Punk.

Crown Jewel will return to Saudi Arabia in November and the pay-per-view, once again, will be built around matches between WWE's four world champions. At it stands, those matches will be Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn vs. World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns and WWE Women's Champion Chelsea Green vs. WWE Women's World Champion Stephanie Vaquer.

Sami Zayn became a two-time WWE Champion in an interference-laden match against CM Punk on SmackDown, with Zayn hitting Punk with the WWE Title belt while the referee tried to get a catatonic Johnny Gargano out of the ring, before Sami followed up with a Helluva Kick for the victory.

Reports have noted there was some internal opposition to Sami Zayn regaining the Undisputed WWE Championship from CM Punk. Zayn previously reigned as WWE Champion for nine days from Night of Champions until CM Punk defeated him for the belt on the July 6 edition of Monday Night Raw.
