Samoa Joe Reveals How Stint On WWE Raw Commentary Team Began

Joe was a permanent commentary fixture in 2020

Samoa Joe has opened up on how his stint as the colour commentator on the WWE Raw announce team came up.

Joe made his commentary debut for WWE in November 2019 as he worked his way back from injury and re-joined the announce booth in April 2020 following reported concussion-related issues.

The Samoan Submission Machine has now revealed the opportunity came about after a couple of appearances on WWE pre-pay-per-view shows and, while he'd never considered a role as a commentator before, he really enjoyed the opportunity to learn a different side of the business.

Speaking to Ryan Satin on the Out Of Character Podcast, Joe revealed: "I think I had a few spots on the pre-show that they enjoyed and then when I was out injured, they asked me if I wanted to do colour on Raw. I said ‘sure, no problem’. I really wasn’t asked to, it was more ‘what are you doing on Monday?’ and it evolved from there.

"I’d never really thought about it in depth. I never really thought of it as something I was gunning for or would transition to after wrestling. But I had a lot of fun. It was a good time and it was cool seeing a different aspect of the business after being in it for so long.

"Being on the cans and hearing all the production mayhem, and getting a handle of the tremendous effort that goes into producing life television. My experience in commentary definitely gave me a greater appreciation of that."
