Scrapped Plans For A Second Kenny Omega AEW Heel Turn Revealed

Kenny Omega was set to turn heel in 2023

Kenny Omega was originally set to become a heel once again in 2023.

Omega had a critically lauded heel run in All Elite Wrestling from December 2020 until November 2021 during his time as AEW World Champion. He transitioned back to being a babyface upon his return from a plethora of injuries in 2022, though, and has remained a babyface ever since.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Kenny Omega was originally booked to turn heel in 2023 by turning on Konosuke Takeshita. This would have maintained the alliance between Omega and Don Callis and Konosuke Takeshita would have been pushed to become a top babyface.

"In that year the original idea was that Kenny Omega and Takeshita were going to be a tag team and that Don Callis and Kenny Omega were going to turn on Takeshita, with the idea that Takeshita is the young babyface and the idea is to make him a top babyface. Obviously, none of that happened because they didn't do anything forever," Meltzer said.

Don Callis ultimately turned on Kenny Omega in May 2023 and Konosuke Takeshita turned heel, aligning with Callis at Double or Nothing to form the Don Callis Family. Takeshita has pinned Kenny Omega twice since then at All In and All Out.

Kenny Omega is currently off AEW TV indefinitely after being diagnosed with diverticulitis.
