The Undertaker Recalls Arguing With Vince McMahon Over United States Flag WWE Angle

The Undertaker and Vince McMahon had a creative disagreement

The Undertaker has forever been one of Vince McMahon’s favourites in WWE, with McMahon seeing The Deadman as a representation of loyalty throughout the Monday Night Wars. McMahon and Undertaker are still good friends, even being seen together at the recent Fury/Ngannou fight in Saudi Arabia.

However, not everything has been smooth sailing for their relationship over the years, with some problems cropping up now and again over Undertaker’s three-decade stay in WWE. Back at the 1993 Survivor Series event, the pair had a creative disagreement.

At the time, The Undertaker character was only three years into its existence, and he hadn’t yet really branched out as someone other than a dark, undead entity. However, he was set to team up with Lex Luger and The Steiner Brothers as part of the All-Americans team, taking on the Foreign Fanatics.

McMahon wanted Undertaker to reveal the American flag stitched into his jacket, showing his support for Luger, though The Undertaker revealed in an interview with Sports Illustrated that he wasn’t on board with that idea.

“I wasn’t thrilled about that. That was all Vince. At the time, in 1993, adding the flag was not Undertaker-esque. I remember me and Vince going back and forth. It was one of those first things we really butted heads over. I still remember Vince trying to sell me, saying, ‘Well, it’s the Betsy Ross flag.’ I was thinking, ‘Well, OK? Is that supposed to change everything?’”

In the end, The Undertaker gave in, saying at the time he didn’t have the confidence to stand up to McMahon.
